WIP - Recycled Sail Luggage Tag

Recently, I received a special request to customize a luggage tag with a number two for a second anniversary gift. Cotton is the traditional gift for a second anniversary and they are celebrating with a trip to the Bahamas. One hitch, my regular luggage tags have only a stitch of cotton - meaning the only cotton in them is the stitching.

In response, I created a custom made luggage tag made of recycled sailcloth with a stripe of navy organic cotton canvas decorated with a machine stitched number 2. Happy anniversary!

I think I'm going to be making a lot more of these ...

Been crunching those numbers in excel lately. Looking back in order to look forward. Taking a breath (or two) to collect my thoughts (and dreams). Analyze and strategize.

The Numbers

Yes, I have a thing for numbers.

This window of a scale and cash register shop on the Bowery near Broome St stopped me in my tracks.

Every kind of scale and cash register know to man kind is probably stacked and packed inside. What a treasure trove - from the ornate old cash register (are they made from cast iron?), to the no nonsense sans serif accuracy of the numbers on the scales. And the metals - brass, chrome and the bright red painted scale in the front.

And a toaster thrown in on the lower right hand corner. Got to diversify, I guess.

A wonderful collection.

Something Old, Something New

Received some new/old sails* earlier this week.
*Old sails that are new to me!
Love them.
Started cutting them today.
Pictured is one of them -a real beauty.
The bags are going to be great. I'll post the finished product next week.

8, eight, VIII

8/8/08 : It's a pretty special day around here.
Wrote about the significance of the number 8 here.
Recap: Eight - The word for "eight" in Chinese sounds similar to the word which means "prosper" or "wealth." In regional dialects the words for "eight" and "fortune" are also similar. It represents good luck.

Reiter8 (re-it-er-ate), my company's name was chosen to reflect the recycling element and I loved it because I could incorporate the number 8 into it - which I felt was catchy. At my first outdoor market, someone informed me about how lucky they number 8 was in Asian cultures. After that, I knew the name was a keeper.

Pillow Talk

Wow, been busy lately. Lots of juggling and new projects in the making.

Received the above photo from the very nice people at the Palisades Development Group who designed the recently opened Pailhouse Holloway in West Hollywood, CA. It's an extended stay 'boutique urban lodge'.


It's so rewarding to see the final destination of the pillows - especially when the surroundings are so stylish. Nice.

Seeing Red

Traditionally red envelopes are given to family members and loved ones on on Chinese New Year and always contain money, usually varying from a couple of dollars to several hundred. The amount of money in the red packets should be of even numbers, as odd numbers are associated with cash given during funerals.

Since the number 4 is considered bad luck, because the word for four is a homophone for death, money in the red envelopes never adds up to $4. However, the number 8 is considered lucky (for its homophone for "wealth"), and $8 is commonly found in the red envelopes. (Thanks Wikipedia for the info)

I love my lucky number 8!!
