Get What You Want

I know the song says 'you can't always get what you want' but sometimes you can ... if you ask.

I'm open to customer's ideas and requests. It's fun to work on different color combinations and create one of a kind bags. Hearing their enthusiasm and excitement in the process is rewarding.

Blue instead of black? No problem! Ikat lining? Sure! Want it tomorrow? Why not! It's great to say YES!

Here's hoping you get what you want this weekend and beyond.

Nautical Wedding: Sail Ring Pillow

I do!

Ah, it's almost that time again. The wedding season is just around the corner!

A recycled sail ring pillow is the ultimate detail for a nautical themed wedding. They are available all white or with the wedding date embroidered on a stripe of green, red, blue, green, black or yellow insignia cloth. I love the richness of the yellow. Available here and here.

Spinnaker Chair

Spinnaker, a Norwegian company has incorporated new and recycled sail material into it's modern furniture line. Constructed to allow your body to rest in a natural position which promotes circulation, this chair is made for comfort.

'A cruising sailboat is a spectacular sight and confirms that mankind
is subject to the laws of nature. This was our design team’s source
of inspiration when creating the SPINNAKER chair.
'

These chairs are made to order with lots of color and material options. You can even choose the text and symbol for the back of the chair.
Pretty cool.

4 K8

I recently made this custom recycled sail 'Kate' tote. Get it? K8 = Kate

It is a second anniversary gift - lined with organic cotton. I'm loving the custom orders that are coming my way. It gives me a chance to hear the stories behind the order and in this case, to meet the local gift giver - a real perk of my job.

Keep 'em coming!

Nautical Wedding

I was recently contacted by a bride-to-be looking to add nautical details to her Newport, RI wedding in July. After discussing several options, she decided on a ring pillow made from upcycled sailcloth.

I had a sail with a 'reefing' grommet that was perfect to secure the rope to hold the wedding rings. I customized it with the date embroidered on the royal blue stripe that matches her bridesmaid dresses. It was a fun project I loved creating something truly unique and special for her wedding day.

Trash or Treasure?

What do you do when your vinyl banner wasn't printed quite right?

If you're Michelle from Cloud 9 Fabrics, you email me. I'm not one for letting something fun like that go to waste; soon it was sitting in my studio staring me down with potential.

Here's a first glimpse at some of the treasure:

Be sure to check out Michelle's collections of organic fabrics. Her current collection is entitled 'My Happy Garden'.

Personally, I'm looking forward to the 'By the Sea' collection which will start shipping in March 2010.

Recycled Sail Christmas Stockings

I've had a custom request for a pair of upcycled sail Christmas stockings and didn't want to send them off with out proper documentation. I was trying to wrap my head around feeling festive for Christmas and it was a little tough since the heat index was something like 126 degrees in my non air-conditioned home yesterday - and again today, thank you very much!

So here they are:

I know that last photo needs poinsettias around the base of the fireplace. They are a little scarce in Brooklyn in late August.

I'm pleased with how the stockings came out: sturdy, clean and bright. Ready and waiting for Santa ... only 125 days to go! (But don't get me wrong - I LOVE people who plan ahead.) I will be making more stockings like these (in two sizes) and they will be for sale online by late September. I'll keep you posted. If you can't wait and want to reserve, drop me an email.

And now we return to your regularly scheduled summer...

Thank You, Zooguu!

Many, many thanks to Jen Gubicza who ran our booth at the Renegade Craft Fair. It's not easy prepping, hauling, setting up, single-handedly offering fantastic customer service for 8 straight hours, breaking down and hauling everything back home. But that's what Jen did for two days in a row.

It's been a pleasure getting to know Jen this year as we are studio mates. I highly recommend a visit to her website as I have witnessed the talent, creativity and drive behind her plush business Zooguu. Pictured above are some examples - don't be fooled by the cuteness - she also has monsters. Well, OK, they are cute, too.

Don't see what you're looking for? Jen will custom create a likeness of your pet, real or imagined.

Anchors Aweigh!*

This bright Anchor tote is making it's debut today. Initiated by a customer request, I have made a couple extra and they are available here.
Enjoy

*Etymology of Anchors Aweigh according to the United States Navy Band's web site
The word "weigh" in this sense comes from the archaic word meaning to heave, hoist or raise. "Aweigh" means that that action has been completed. The anchor is aweigh when it is pulled from the bottom. This event is duly noted in the ship's log.

You learn something new everyday!

Record Deal

I love the genius behind these custom upcycled record necklaces from Junk Prints. How cool is that!?

$34 will buy you 9 letters and a choice of 3 typefaces, but Chanel from Junk Prints will also quote you a price for longer custom names or phrases.

Think of it as you're very own record deal!
