Juggling this week

This week is nuts.

Husband is traveling all week ... with the car. So, in addition to prepping for fairs (Renegade and Eco Fair at the Brooklyn Museum) I've got full parental duties and all that encompasses: chauffeur, cook, study partner, psychologist, house cleaner, personal shopper in addition to small business owner.

The bright side? At least the husband took the dogs so dog walker is not on the list.

When I was thinking about everything I have on my to do list and the different places I need to be everyday - I thought of 'Penelope' juggling and the quick editing showcasing her self taught hobbies in the 'Brothers Bloom'. (click below)

Here's to keeping all the balls and chain saws in the air!

Back in the game...

That blog suspension went a little longer than expected, apologies.

I'm back - kind of. Tomorrow I'll be heading up to Beantown to run the Tufts 10k. Originally called the Bonnie Bell for it's sponsor back in 1977, I ran in that inaugural year (and a few thereafter) with my sister, Meg and our track team, Liberty AC (one of whom won the race: then high school senior Lynn Jennings in a time of 34:31.) It was a fun race and just having turned 13, I was ripe for the goodie bag of cosmetics with the prized jumbo watermelon lip smackers lip gloss... on a string to wear around your neck!

My mom also ran the race that year. She started running out of boredom and curiosity after carting me and my sister so many times to and from track practice. One day she stepped out on the track herself and ran a lap. Then two and so on.

She joined the track team that I had run with. She has run marathons although these days, sticks to shorter races. She has steadily plugged away, jogging longer (literally) than my sister and I. I remember how trilled she was to turn 65 because her chances of winning were now renewed in this, her new age group.

So she will be running the Tufts 10k again. This will be her 32nd year...straight. She hasn't missed one. I have traveled to run with her for the past 3 years. Now that I'm no longer a scornful teen who wants to run away from her mom, it'll be nice to keep pace with her - if I can! Wish me luck - I'll need it!!

More on the race here. A bio of my mom and all the other 'lifers' here.

MAD on a rainy day

Although Improve Everywheres's MP3 event will be held rain or shine, if you want to avoid the rain drops altogether today you might head over to the Museum of Art and Design's grand public opening at their new location at 2 Columbus Circle.

The featured exhibit is Second Lives: Remixing the Ordinary opens today and runs through February 15, 2009.
(Pictured above:Tara Donovan, Bluffs, 2007, Buttons, glue, Photo: Kerry Ryan McFate)

Museum hours are 10-5 and admission is FREE for this weekend.
(The website actually says 10-6 in one place and 10-5 in another)

If you go, I would love to hear your thoughts and reactions to the space and exhibit.

Even closer to home is Dumbo's Art Under the Bridge
The Annual Art Under the Bridge Festival is the single largest urban forum for experimental art in the United States, transforming the distinctive waterfront neighborhood into a multi-sensory public art arena. The event involves the participation of approximately 1,500 artists from all disciplines of visual art and attracts over 150,000 visitors to the neighborhood of Dumbo each year.
So many choices, so little time!

MP3 Experiment #5 on Governor’s Island

Those crazy guys at Imrov Everywhere are at it again. This time with the MP3 Experiment #5 planned to take place this Sat 9/25 on Governor’s Island. Event details here.

Basically, you download an MP3 and listen to it at a designated time in a very public space . The MP3 instructs you to do all sorts of G rated things and on lookers are totally baffled. OK, so it's just plain goofy. But it's kinda funny, too. View past MP3 events here.

If you haven't been to Governor’s Island, it's a good excuse. If you're coming from Brooklyn try this route for added extra fun: Free Ikea shuttle from Borough Hall to the FREE Ikea Water Taxi to the FREE Governor’s Island Ferry.

The finish line is in sight! Most of the bags from this sail are finished. Still have yet to photograph and list on Etsy.
Will try to squeeze that in on a packed day.
Happy Friday!

Clearwater Music Festival

We miss the Clearwater Music Festival every year because it conflicts with camp drop off, but it looks like a great way to spend a day this weekend.

Still haven't found my camera-to-computer download cord. I will look in earnest after I get a couple of wholesale orders out the door (and pack the kids for camp!)

The Renegade Craft fair was fantastic. Keeps getting better and better. I promise to post details soon.

Freezing at Grand Central

I love this. Improv Everywhere sets missions for their agents. Check out this recent NYC mission:
On a cold Saturday in New York City, the world’s largest train station came to a sudden halt. Over 200 Improv Everywhere Agents froze in place at the exact same second for five minutes in the Main Concourse of Grand Central Station

See other previous missions here.
See Freeze Events in London and Toronto here
New Yorkers can sign up to be an agent here. Everyone else: here at the IE Global Site.
See you at the next mission.

GOOD December Pop Up Community Center

Good Magazine has popped up in NOLITA with a Community Center on 201 Mulberry St. (map) at the Openhouse Gallery. The center is organized around the themes of Media, Environment, Technology, Design, Education, Culture, Business & Money, and Health.

Yesterday I worked on setting up part of the space and didn't have the time to investigate the displays, but there's plenty of interesting products and ideas to merit a return visit for a closer look. There's lots of opportunity for hands on exploration and interaction.

Etsy will be holding screenprinting and fusing plastic bag workshops on December 8th and 9th from 11am to 5pm.
The space will be open to the public daily from 11am-6pm December 6th through 23rd.

"Sometimes, love cuts like a knife"

So says the New York City Opera when describing Carmen. We had the pleasure of an invitation to join friends at the opera on Sat night. Going to the opera has always been on my lifetime 'to do' list and I was thrilled to be ticking it off. Dress up? Check. Eat a fabulous dinner in the green room at the opera house? Check. Sit and enjoy with eyes and ears the amazing talent that makes up the New York City Opera? Check. Many thanks to Kara and Roy and Julie and Joseph.
Listen to an audio sample and watch a trailer here and purchase tickets here.

Hmmm, what's next on the list???
